Scott County is part of the Sikeston, MO metropolitan area, which includes St. Louis, Kansas City, Missouri and Jefferson City. On December 28, 1821, the Missouri State Legislature established Scott County, the second county that formed the southeastern Missouri Plains. The county was founded in 1821 and named after the Scott River, a major water source for the state of Missouri in the late 1820s and early 1920s. In 1822, the present county town of Benton was created and named because of its proximity to the river and the town of Oran, about 30 miles south.
In 2004, Missourians voted for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. It passed Scott County overwhelmingly with 85.32 percent of the vote, and the initiative passed the state, with Missouri becoming the first state to ban same-sex marriage. The proposal also passed every single district in Missouri, raising the minimum wage to $6.50 an hour in all states.
